R also stands for Rachid, a young Muslim prisoner who becomes Rune's friend and accomplice, defying the rigid racial stratifications among the inmates. The film uses real ex-convicts and ex-guards (all cast in their respective roles) to depict a prison system where violence is the only accepted currency.
